Description: The 2021 American Community Survey estimates an increase to 197,846 blind or visually impaired New York City residents and 396,130 blind or visually impaired New York State residents. The Eye Disease Prevalence Research Group reports blindness and low vision increase significantly with age, with Americans 80 years and older accounting for the most significant increase in the blind population.

Join our colleagues from VISIONS/Services for the Blind and Visually impaired, a nonprofit rehabilitation and social service organization who will provide concrete tips and practices that can be applied to your older adult center and when working one to one with clients who have vision loss. Learn about human guide, how to make things accessible, how to communicate with someone who is visually impaired, various accessible equipment and assistive technology that are available to clients and the array of services that are available to clients to live safely and independently with vision loss.

Guidelines for Virtual Participation: 

  • Overall, we encourage attendees’ cameras/audio to be enabled during the discussion segments of the agenda.

  • During the presentation, we encourage the use of chat box to share contact information, updates, and resources, as well as questions and comments for our speakers.

  • After the presentation, we encourage attendees to unmute themselves or utilize the chat box for Q&A.
