LIVEON NY RESPONDS TO GOV HOCHUL’S FAILURE TO INVEST IN NY’S OLDER ADULTS IN STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS

NEW YORK, NY — In response to Governor Hochul’s State of the State address, Allison Nickerson, Executive Director of LiveOn NY, released the following statement:

“Today, Governor Hochul fell short in addressing the dire needs of New York’s older adults. One in five people in New York are over the age of 65, but in her address, the Governor failed to mention older adults even once.

“New York’s current systems and policies are fragmented and siloed. The chaotic and confusing care system struggles to meet demand. And as the cost of living continues to rise, older NYers and caregivers cannot afford basic necessities, including rent, food, and medication. The State Office for the Aging receives a meager $178 million–less than 0.08% of the budget for the entire State. This cannot stand.

“By strengthening social-model care and community-based resources, we can help older adults avoid unnecessary long-term care placements, saving millions every year in Medicaid costs and establishing the state as a safe haven for our aging population. LiveOn NY will continue to push Governor Hochul to take bold action and prioritize investments that meet the current and anticipated needs of New York’s aging population.”
